You protect the critical part of the code by enclosing it in a synchronized block. The syncK variable, being defined in a declaration element, is an instance variable shared like k among all the requests. We haven t used k because synchronized requires an object. In this simple case, instead of creating a new object specifically to protect the code, we could have used this, representing the servlet itself. But in general, if there were more than one block of code to protect, it wouldn t be a good idea. The best strategy to optimize efficiency, besides staying locked as little as possible, is to use specific locks.

one or more DNS lookups to convert hostnames into IP addresses. Subrequests over SSL require even more bandwidth and processing power. They also take time to execute. Even though waiting for an HTTP response from the providing server is not a CPU-intensive operation, it means that the local server s current process is taking up memory and cycles (and at least one server process) while doing essentially nothing for a short while. A typical web request-response cycle might take a hundredth of a second, meaning that a single server process can handle 100 per second. But when an HTTP subrequest is added, it can take a few extra tenths of a second for the subrequest to be received remotely and responded to. If the response is large (a few megabytes, say), then the whole cycle will take even longer. A single server process may be able to handle only a few such requests per second, which is a tremendous performance hit. By requiring an unusual amount of CPU time, such a transaction qualifies as a potentially unsafe operation. Subrequests that are likely to take a long time, whether because of poor network conditions, busy servers, or large, processor-intensive applications, should be queued and carried out in a managed way.

The include directive merges the content of another file into a JSP page. Tomcat does it before translating the page to produce Java code and a servlet class. For example, this code includes the file named whatever with the ext extension in the same directory as the including file: <%@include file="whatever.ext"%> Any text file with any extension will do. As the merging is done before the page is translated, all the HTML tags and JSP variables are available to the code stored in the included file. That said, you have to be careful not to go overboard with these inclusions, because with code spread over several fragments, your pages could quickly become unmaintainable.

You can extend the number of available JSP tags by directing Tomcat to use tag libraries. The taglib directory identifies a tag library and specifies what prefix is used to distinguish the new tags.
